Worthy or unworthy:  What does it matter?

I.  Generally I think of myself as being:

The state of California has not permitted the building of electric power generating facilities for over 20 years.  It is now experiencing shortages of electricity that cause rolling brownouts and blackouts.  Do you think Californians should have built more generating facilities and realized that smart scientists would resolve the problems of increased pollution?

Yes, they could have had electricity and better antipollution technologies

The New York Yankees baseball team won - again - the World Series!  What if the first baseman were replaced by a guy whose only qualification is that he is the brother of the team's owner?  Do you think the N. Y. Yankees would be as likely to win the World Series next year?

Yes, first base is a very easy position to play

The United States is dependent upon potentially unfriendly political regimes for the oil needed to sustain its production of food and its economy.  Do you think there should be more domestic exploration and antipollution engineering by the most worthy scientists?

Yes, we can have more oil and better antipollution
     technologies

No, I don't use oil, gas, etc.

20. To allow or to not allow the most worthy to be yours:

Assume you just bought the SUV of your dreams -- you've wanted it for as long as you can remember.  You arrive at the dealer and she informs you that the factory made a mistake and shipped another vehicle in place of the one you ordered.  She says, "...But don't worry, it's the same price."  You look at it and it's an economy sedan with 2-wheel drive and a 4 cylinder engine." What might you do?

I'd pay for it and try to be happy
I would not accept it because it can't carry my stuff and it won't make it on my mountain vacation

21. To allow or to not allow the most worthy to receive educations:

Many medical schools have admission quota guidelines to insure that various ethnic and racial groups gain entry.  Some people worry society is not getting the best doctors possible because good students whose categories have been filled will not gain entry even though their grades are higher than applicants of other 'more
needed' groups.  Do you think there should be ethnic and racial quota guidelines or should those applicants with the best grades be offered educations irrespective of ethnicity or race?
