Grandstanding for personal gain leads to society's weakening and eventual downfall.

Editorial commentary:

Thoreau was a grand thinker who conceptualized ideas and put them into a context
applicable forall times and all people.

The other individuals, Parks, King, Gandhi, were activists who used their relatively narrowed,
short-term goals and constituencies to promote themselves.  Minor gains were achieved for
the masses through their methods, but those pseudo-leaders were the winners of power
and fame  ---  not their followers.

For people who think and have goals for worthy constituencies, Thoreau-type leaders endure for
their substantive greatness over time.
