Is The US Constitution An Anachronism?
Today's Issue:   The US Constitution, written well over two-hundred years ago, has been the foundation for building a great nation.  Can today's society continue to evolve using this document as its foundation?

1.  Do you believe the Constitution provided the basis for development of the US? Yes
No

2.  Law, order and standards of civility of our society follow from principles stated in the US Constitution. Agree
Disagree

3.  Without the Constitution, the US culture, economy, life style, and society would have evolved into a less structured and more disorderly nation. Agree
Disagree

4.  The Constitution impacts legislative law-making. Agree
Disagree

5.  The Constitution has no impact upon my daily life. Agree
Disagree

6.  From time to time we hear that some organization or public action lawyer has filed a lawsuit to limit or eliminate some product or service.  For example, recently a San Francisco lawyer threatened to file a suit against Nabisco calling for the court to mandate that it is illegal for children to consume Oreo cookies because they contain trans-fatty acids.   Another example is the Brooklyn lawyer group that filed a suit -- thrown out a few months ago but now reworked --  asking the court to order McDonalds Corporation to pay some overweight people for being overweight because they ate McDonalds food which made them fat.

The basis for these suits is often identified as a variation of some constitutional principle known and accepted by most people.  When we hear them reported some of us think, "Wow, that's an interesting variation of a constitutional concept."

These suits are twisted interpretations of good, important principles
These lawyers are only out to make big names for themselves
A rational court system administered by judges of reason would not accept these frivolous law suits
These lawyers are our only protection from greedy corporations that are operated by our family members, neighbors, and college friends

7.  The United States -- created well over 200 years ago -- built itself into an economic powerhouse, demonstrates social and cultural preeminence, has always been a safe haven of opportunity for millions of immigrants from around the world, and has been the birthplace of countless technical innovations.  The US Constitution and its implementation as guided by the Supreme Court, Congressional legislation and the Executive branch deserves credit for the over 200 year-long success and development of the USA. Agree
Disagree

8.  The many men who wrote the US Constitution debated and argued vehemently for years before they arrived at the final document signed by its main founders as we see it today.  The Constitution is a reflection of the culture and intellect of those men. Agree
Disagree

9.  In order for the Constitution to work, most people must agree to abide by its doctrines and by its legislative and judicial systems' interpretations made by its institutions, such as the Supreme Court, Congress and the Executive branch. Agree
Disagree

10.  Each of us can make progress only if we cooperate and work together in peace and safety.  That framework is what the US Constitution provides to each US citizen. Agree
Disagree

11.  The principles and conceptual values that underpin the Constitution are as valid today as ever.  Today's misapplications and misinterpretations of constitutional values occur and are accepted because the Reasonable Man is dead. Agree
