The news is getting more strange and less new.

Why do you think it is so difficult for people to understand the following fact?
"When taxes are cut, people have more money left in their pockets so then they can buy more stuff, and then businesses can hire more people to make more stuff to sell.  Businesses then make more money and pay more in taxes to the government."
People aren't smart enough to understand
People don't think about these things
Some politicains have convinced people that taxes are good

Kobe who?
Before his run in with sex and trash, had you ever heard of Kobe?
Yes
No
I thought it was that place in Japan where the big earth quake struck several years ago

Toddlers have bad eating habits.
Many American children -- even before their second birthdays -- develop the same bad eating habits as their parents.  This includes too much fat, sugar and salt and few fruits and vegetables.   The study of over 3,000 toddlers found meaningful numbers of infants and toddlers are eating French fries, pizza, candy and soda.

"Children aged 1 to 2 years require about 950 calories per day, but the study found that the median intake for that age group is 1,220 calories, — an excess of nearly 30%. For those 7 months to 11 months old, the daily caloric surplus was about 20%."

"By 24 months, patterns look startlingly similar to some of the problematic American dietary patterns," said an overview of the Feeding Infants & Toddlers Study, ordered by the Gerber Products Company, the baby-food maker.

I am not surprised after looking at the parents of today

Lawyers "earn" their keep... again.

3,000 of Chicago's street-begging homeless have won!  Many beggars will receive $400 dollars from a $99,000 fund established as a result of a suit brought by a lawyers group.  The lawyers will be paid $375,000.

I am not surprised because I understand how confused the legal system is today.

Dateline Yesterday:  Former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole says he's not pleased with the first of several debates planned with former President Bill Clinton.  The debates are to run on CBS' 60 Minutes program.
Return of the clown & so-called 'candidate'

The 1996 presidential opponents recently taped a debate about the wisdom of cutting taxes in wartime.  "I think it needs to be a little tougher," Dole said Friday. "It needs to have a little more edge to it for people to be interested." Clinton picked the first topic and Dole will choose the next.  Each of the debates will feature about 45 seconds of commentary from each man.

"I don't know how they'll get it into 60 minutes," Dole said. "To try to get (Clinton) to say anything in 45 seconds is pretty hard."

What was your first reaction when you heard about these 'debates'?

Will these guys ever just go away?
Neither had any wisdom before, so why now?
Wow, that's great. They're still making money while saying nothing.
I've missed hearing Bill's wisdom.
I've missed hearing Bob's wisdom.

Dateline Tomorrow:  When people exercise, proteins, enzymes, and other chemicals are created in excess, released into the blood, and flow through the brain.  Long-term, frequent and excessive flow of these chemicals through the brain is instrumental in causing Alzheimer's disease. Agree
Disagree
Wow, I never thought of that, but maybe I'll exercise a little less

First Female Elected Leader of House Minority (minority party, not minority gender)
Nancy Pelosi was elected leader of the Democrat party members in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Have you ever seen her not grinning?

Yes
No
I wonder how she always finds something to grin about
A lot less smiley now that she is actually on the job

Who wants what?
At the same time that Al and Tipper Gore purchased a third home, a $2.3 million Southern-styled mansion, Tipper stated that Republicans are interested only in getting rich.
Easy for her to say -- she's already rich
What's wrong with working & getting rich?
Tipper's out of touch with the real world
Tipper's rather stupid

From the AP News wire
"Toronto (AP) -- Fur isn't for rich folks, but it's fine for the homeless.  At least according to some animal-rights activists.  People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA, is giving fur coats to the poor.  PETA has teamed with a Toronto community center to donate 30 hand-me-down fur coats and jackets to homeless women.
PETA is trying to drive home its message that animals should not be victims of fashion. A PETA spokeswoman says the only people who should wear furs are the truly destitute"
Do you have a comment?

PETA is providing furs to homeless. I have no comment.

The Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional.  So sayeth who?
Imagine that some of the juveniles of the '60's who never grew up, but did become lawyers, got connected politically, and then were appointed to judgeships.  Imagine how even some once-respected, but aging, and needing to be cool, individuals tried too hard to be too politically correct in their roles as judges.  Imagine the decisions and precedents that might be established....

On June 26, 2001, the 9th Circuit Court ruled that the words, "under God" turn the Pledge of Allegiance into an unconstitutional violation of the separation of church and state.  On June 27, Judge Goodwin, the three judge panel's leader, issued a stay pending further appeals.

Check all choices to the right that you agree with.

Tribunal leader, Judge Goodwin
These judges abused their power when they acted in the interest of political correctness by labeling the pledge unconstitutional.
This decision should be overturned.
The issuance of the stay so quickly by such a high judicial body is indicative of the broken and weakened nature of our legal system.
I wonder if our legal system will again be inhabited by the Reasonable Man  --- and Woman....

Dateline Today:
Imagine if the Bush administration, CIA & FBI teams had prevented the attacks on September 11.  The media would be talking about 20 Middle Eastern men, "Mostly Saudi citizens, potential terrorists who had planned multiple attacks against civilian and government buildings on the U.S. mainland."  If the attacks had been thwarted, what would be happening today?
Lawyers & Rights groups would be screaming about the Saudi 20, their rights and illegal detentions.
The administration, CIA & FBI would be hailed as heroes.
The administration, CIA & FBI would be attacked as right-wing nuts abusing everyone's rights.
Most people would have forgotten about it by now.

2002, the Arthur Andersen conviction & our post-9/11 culture.
Considering the many aspects of our culture including the psychology, morals, ethics, and tolerance for lying, cheating and deceiving, etc., do you think that Arthur Andersen & Co. would have been convicted in the period before 9/11?
9/11 did change us in these ways
9/11 did not change us in these ways

Dead Snake Stalls BART Extension, By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- "A dead garter snake, one of an endangered species, stalled construction on the Bay Area Rapid Transit, BART, extension to San Francisco International Airport for the second time.

State wildlife officials ordered work stopped Thursday and were investigating. Last fall, the discovery of a dead garter snake near the tracks stopped construction for 18 days and cost BART $1.07 million.

"We are working with BART to make sure they are sensitive to issues concerning the garter snake," said Robert Floerke, regional manager for the state Department of Fish and Game.  Officials did not anticipate a long delay.

The pencil-thin snake with vivid red and black stripes is listed as endangered by the state.  The largest remaining population lives near the airport.

After the first snake was found dead, a 5 mph speed limit was posted in the area and workers were required to check under parked vehicles for the snakes.

Extending the transit line to the airport is estimated to cost $1.5 billion and be completed by December. BART already has spent close to $6 million to comply with environmental laws and has relocated more than 75 snakes."

I wish I lived in California so I could help pay to relocate garter snakes --- and other similar causes.
That's nuts!
I want to sign up to receive a few relocated snakes.
That is very benevolent & I approve

The state of history & the new historians... or are they?
About a year ago Doris Kearns Goodwin and other noted popular history book authors admitted to have plagiarized in more than one of their books.  These writers have each turned out several books over recent years.  Do you classify them as historians in the traditional sense?
Yes
Yes, sadly they are today's version
No
No, they are better called writers of historic novels

Unification for Civilized Behavior & Progress:
Will the terrorist attack in the United States against all civilized people be enough to provide the rational understanding that we must stop our focus on racial, gender, religious, cultural & economic in-fighting and cooperate to protect civilization from the uncivilized?
Yes
No
Yes, obviously we need to de-emphasize the in-fighting on minor issues and cooperate on big issues if civilization is to make progress

Let's get this straight... finally:
Dateline Cambridge, Mass., (AP) -- Harvard President Lawrence Summers pledged his commitment to diversity Wednesday in response to reports that three prominent black professors are considering leaving because of problems with his leadership.

In the statement, Summers said diversity "contributes to educational excellence by enabling outstanding students, faculty and staff of all backgrounds to come together and learn from one another."

Diversity only contributes to educational excellence when standards are held high
Standards must be held high to ensure students capable of educational excellence are admitted and those not capable are not admitted
Diversity should not over-look the caliber of all who are included
Admitting students who do not meet high academic standards brings down standards of the university
Minority individuals must meet high standards or they should not be admitted just to create diversity
University standards must be held high even if there are not enough individuals in some groups who meet high standards
Only those individuals meeting standards should be admitted
No one should be admitted just to make the university diverse

What do you think:
Instead of taking money from successful people in the form of taxes and having the government redistribute that money, we do the following:

Let's decrease the gap between the rich and the poor by encouraging the poor to get educated, get jobs and get wealthier.

I like that idea
I don't like that idea
And here's why:

Bart or O.J.?:
The University of Michigan announced that it will offer a two credit hour course covering the philosophy of The Simpsons TV cartoon show.  What do you think about the university administrations and faculties running today's universities?
I wish I could afford to send my kids to the U. of M.
This may not contribute to the future development of Western Civilization
That's even more disgusting than Oprah's Northwestern U. class on how to be successful

Driving today:
When driving I consiously do the following.
Run red lights
Run stop signs
Speed
Don't yield to pedestrians
None of the above

Energy supply:
When will people come to understand that the industrialized nations need coherent Long-term National Energy Policies that coordinate natural gas, hydroelectric, nuclear, coal, geothermal, wind and fuel cell sources with end-user demand.
When there is effective leadership that can explain and innovate plans & solutions
Never

Other:

The U. S. Postal Service:
From the Associated Press:
"Universal postal service to every address at uniform and affordable rates is written in the Constitution and has been a requirement since the founding of the nation.  For years Congress subsidized the service, but when the current system was created in the 1970s the subsidies were phased out, and the post office no longer receives taxpayer money for its operations."

Do you think the breakdown in this once reliable service is indicative of the overall weakened and rotting work ethic in this nation?

Yes, the work ethic is in decline.
No
USPS mail service will eventually be replaced by electronic mail & private delivery services like UPS, FedEx, etc.
Your Comment:

Lecturing:
Have you noticed that we no longer get so many lectures daily with finger-jabbing instructing us on what is right and wrong from so many people?
Yes, and it is wonderfully peaceful.
No, I didn't notice.
I enjoyed the lecturing & finger-jabbing.

Victims of substance abuse:
We often hear on the news that someone (Robert Downey, Jr., Liza Minnelli, Roger Clinton, etc., etc.) has a 'substance problem' or is a 'victim of substance abuse'.  When you hear this refrain do you ever think to yourself that this so-called 'victim' has a character problem, not a substance abuse problem?
Yes
No
No, I try not to think

Mr. Daschle, do you understand?
When speaking about the proposed tax cut Congressional leader Tom Daschle stated that if you make over $300,000 you get a enough of a tax cut to buy a Lexus and if you make $50,000 you get enough of a tax cut to buy a muffler for your used car.
In the USA we have a graduated income tax.  Do you think Daschle understands that the more you pay in taxes the more of a tax cut you receive?
Yes
No
Of course not.

What do you think?
Recently a psychologist expressed her belief that, "Today's women reflexively assert themselves.  They assert themselves in all situations from driving to business to their strident speech styles.  They appear to have no self-control or ability to judge when not to assert."  Do you agree with this observation and analysis?
Yes, I agree
No, I do not agree
No, I do not agree & she better watch out!

Building a successful military force:
The new U.S. Army recruiting campaign focuses on the theme of "An army of one."  This means that the individual is the new army  --  that the army is a collection of individuals.  Many individuals who have served in the military understand that any successful defensive and offensive military force relies on the concepts of "Teamwork solidly implemented with coordination and control using a solid chain of command."

Would you feel secure and that you were part of an effective military if the guy on your left and right flanks, front and rear, and your leadership were each individuals looking out for himself first and you and your country maybe secondarily?

No, I know that only through cooperative teamwork can a military action be successful.
Yes, I want to be shot at while standing alone.

Electricity in short supply:
The state of California has not permitted the building of electric power generating facilities for over 20 years.  It has now experienced shortages of electricity that cause rolling brownouts and blackouts.  Do you think Californians should have built more generating facilities and realized that science would resolve the problems of increased pollution?
Yes, they could have had electricity and better antipollution technologies
No, I don't see that
I am afraid to think about it

Issue:  US Stock markets peaked March-April, 2000.  On April 14, the U.S. government released statistics that indicated inflation is alive and growing.  That same day many markets experienced major selling. Some media reporters and analysts characterized the drop in stock prices as a reaction to growing inflation.

Others believe that the drop in stocks -- even the big drops -- had nothing to do with CPI or PPI inflation realizations.

Instead, this other group believes the game is coming to an end for the classic reason:
The greatest fool wandered in and bought stock with his last margin money
at a price too high.  There was a psychological change in people's attitudes toward stocks.

Issue:

America Online claims it has reached a new high plateau of 29 million customers.

Why do so many people select AOL as their Internet Service Provider (ISP)?

Please check all that apply:
Everyone else is using it
I've been told it's the best
I can get things there I can't get elsewhere
AOL makes it easy for inexperienced users
There is really no reason to select AOL over others
It's easy to sign up
The are no alternatives
There is really little difference between most ISPs
I do not understand why so many select AOL
It was on my computer when I bought it

Issue:

 School Shootings

There have been no shootings in private schools.

I knew that.
I didn't realize that.

The issue of violence:

Cowardly shooting attacks by individuals upon defenseless, unsuspecting adults and children in offices, schools and churches. For over 20 years movies and TV shows have shown heros and villains, the 'Bruce Willis' and the 'Arnold Schwarzeneggers' using automatic weapons to spray bullets into people thus resolving frustrations and disputes. In recent years kids and adults have used computer games to assert violent acts upon animated figures causing blood and guts to spew out as a mark of success.

Do you believe that movies, TV and computer games have numbed people to the results of violence?

Yes
No

Do you believe movies, TV and computer games have taught people that the remedy for frustration is to sneak up and inflict nasty, deadly pain upon others who are defenseless and not able to defend themselves? Yes
No

Road-rage is similar to shooting-rage except the attacker uses a car instead of a gun. Agree
